One Room Challenge Week 3 & 4
HOLY CANNOLI BATMAN!! It has been a wild two weeks here at the Mesa Casa. I spent week 3 away from home for work so very little was accomplished except online shopping.... ;) All of the final decisions for products, methods and colors were finalized and supplies are here! I still can't believe I managed to talk B into doing this overhaul. I couldn't have done this project without him.
Shiplap was the first project on the agenda for the week and IT. LOOKS. AH-MAZING. I had several inspiration pictures and we were able to bring them to life in the kitchen.
Clearly there is a theme here and it has sparked some serious debate (and eye rolls, furrowed brows and probably a side mouth comment or two). I'm not sure why the black paint seems so strange to everyone... until they see photos like this and it clicks! The bright white, the open shelves, and all of the natural light actually make it feel crisp and airy. No dungeon kitchen here!!
Ok, I'll climb down off of my thrifted soapbox now to show you a little progress to our kitchen....
Let's get back to the shiplap we installed. We purchased pre-primed shiplap planks from our local Home Depot so no spacers required!! If any of you have ever had to use tile spacers before you will understand my exuberance. (See bathroom renovation post for my true feelings on the topic) No this is not a sponsored post I just really love Home Depot and any linked products (in green) are simply products I used/tested and enjoy using.
The planks were all measured, cut to length and applied first. The second step was covering all of the edges with primed 1x3 trim boards that come square on all sides. If you've never worked with square on all sides wood you are missing out on life! It was a dream compared to the typical lumber we work with. The 1x3's created an edge and trimmed everything out while covering all the seams too! WIN,win!
Look at it! LOOK AT IT!!!! It went from gross, yellowing laminate cabinet backs to built-in, planked awesomeness. I couldn't be more proud.... but here is were everything gets controversial. To my friends, my family and the girl in the Home Depot paint department: "I'm painting it black and I'm not sorry."
If you will all reference Season 4 | Episode 6 of Fixer Upper, Shiplap CAN be black and still look amazing. If the mother of all home decor, Joanna, can do it.... so can I.
Next on the list of projects, concrete countertops and open shelves for a coffee bar. Stay tuned....
